I tried something different at the Grand National Steeplechase this year – slow shutter speeds (between 1/20 – 1/80 second) in combination with panning the camera. The idea is to show motion in the image and blur the background, however to be most effective you want part of the subject to come in sharp – ideally here, the jockey (1/20 second may of been too slow)…
